Covid-19 vaccine third shot – Who Are Eligible?

The covid-19 pandemic is far from over. The virus continues to mutate, so experts are doing their best to limit the spread of infection. One measure they impose is the 3rd shot of vaccine (วัคซีนเข็ม3, term in Thai). In this article, we will discuss the third shot of the vaccine, who is eligible, and why it is necessary to have a third shot of Covid-19.

What is the difference between a third shot and a booster shot?

The third shot of the covid-19 vaccine is most of the time mistaken for a booster shot when, in fact, it is the third dose of vaccine aiming to improve the patient’s immune response to the Covid-19 virus. It is needed in people whose immune system does not respond much to that of the first two doses of vaccines, especially in people who are moderately and severely immunocompromised.

On the other hand, a booster pertains to an additional dose of vaccine to prolong protective immunity in a person who responded fully after getting the first two doses of covid-19 vaccine. Still, for some reason, protection from the virus is weaning. Basically, a booster shot is a top-up of one’s immune response to the previous vaccine series.

The Food and Drug Administration expanded some of the top-notch Covid-19 vaccine brands like Johnson & Johnson, Moderna, and Pfizer to include a booster shot. However, there are a few things to keep in mind before having a booster shot, one of which is the fact that not all are qualified to have a booster shot. In addition, the type of vaccine you are allowed to receive will depend on your age as well as how fat out you are from the previous doses.

Who are eligible to receive the third shot of the Covid-19 vaccine?

Those eligible to receive the third shot are people with immunocompromised conditions, provided they are at least 5 years old and above. Other eligible individuals include:

  • People who are 12 years old and above received Pfizer (5+) five months ago.
  • People who are 18 years old and above received Moderna (6+) six months ago.
  • People who are 18 years old and above received Johnson & Johnson (2+) two months ago.

If you meet the criteria mentioned above, then, by all means, you can have a third shot of the Covid-19 vaccine. If you are uncertain whether you are eligible for the third dose of the Covid-19 vaccine, the best thing to do is to contact your doctor. You will be checked thoroughly, especially the type of Covid-19 you previously received, the timing, and the vaccine duration.

That way, the vaccinator can assess whether giving you a third shot does more good than harm, which is why it is of utmost importance to keep your vaccine card and bring it with you on your next appointment. The world is still in a pandemic state, and just because you previously received the vaccine does not mean you can be lax with following the Covid-19 protocol. It would be nice to follow the protocol and receive the necessary and timely vaccine.
